Phuket Aquarium (Cape Panwa) The aquarium, which is under the supervision of the Marine Biology and Fishery Research Institute, was initially established for the scientific study and conservation of marine life, especially marine turtles and dugongs (sea cows). As time went on, many visitors to Phuket who had heard of the aquarium privately requested to see these rare marine species. The number of visitors grew from small to larger groups. The research institute had to spare its academic staff to lead the tours for each visiting group, with the aim to educate and cultivate a sense of conservation. The Fishery Department therefore decided to open the facility to the general public as an aquarium, adding staff and hundreds of exotic and colorful marine species for display.
